How to Prepare for Sign-Out

As the academic year wraps up, it's time to start thinking about moving out of your student accommodation. Whether you've been with us for one term or several years, preparing your house properly for smooth sign-out is essential.

Here’s everything you need to know to get your home ready before you hand over the keys:

Clean Thoroughly
A general tidy-up won’t be enough — a full deep clean is needed. Focus on:

• Kitchens: Clean the oven, hob, microwave, fridge (defrost if needed), and all surfaces.
• Bathrooms: Remove limescale, clean the toilet, sink, shower, and mirrors.
• Floors: Hoover all carpets and mop any hard flooring.
• Bins: Empty and clean all bins and take out the rubbish.

Check the Inventory
Look back at the inventory you received when you moved in. Make sure everything listed is still there and in the same condition (reasonable wear and tear accepted).

Remove All Belongings
It sounds obvious, but double-check drawers, wardrobes, under beds, and cupboards. Anything left behind may be removed and could incur a charge.

Dispose of Waste Responsibly
Don’t leave piles of bin bags or unwanted items for someone else to deal with. Use council waste collection services or local recycling centres where necessary.

Take Final Meter Readings
If you're responsible for utilities, take final gas, electricity, and water readings and send them to your providers. This helps avoid issues with final bills and closing your accounts properly.

Return All Keys
Keys should be returned to our office by the deadline provided. Late returns may be charged, so don’t leave it to the last minute!

Fix Damages
Check the condition of the property and take note of any damage that may have occurred during your tenancy. If needed, repair or replace any broken items such as light fixtures, locks, doors, windows, or furniture. Don’t forget to fill in any wall holes and touch up paint where necessary.

Document with Photos
After you’ve thoroughly cleaned the property and removed all your belongings, take clear photos for your own records. These images can be useful as proof of the property’s condition in case any issues or disputes come up later.
