As the academic year comes to an end, it’s time to start preparing for moving out of your student property. Whether you’ve stayed for a term or the full year, taking the right steps before sign-out will help ensure everything runs smoothly and avoids any unnecessary issues.
A thorough clean is essential before you leave. This means more than a quick tidy. Make sure kitchens, bathrooms and all living spaces are properly cleaned, including appliances, surfaces and flooring. Don’t forget to empty and clean bins and remove all rubbish from the property.
Before you go, check your original inventory and make sure everything is still present and in good condition, allowing for fair wear and tear. It’s also important to remove all personal belongings, including anything tucked away in cupboards, drawers or under beds.
Be mindful of how you dispose of waste and unwanted items. Using local recycling centres or collections where needed rather than leaving items behind.
If you’re responsible for utilities, take final meter readings and send them to your providers to ensure your accounts are settled correctly.
You’ll also need to return all keys by the agreed deadline, as late returns may result in additional charges. Take a moment to check for any damage and repair or report anything that may need attention, such as marks on walls or broken fixtures.
Take time to check for any damage that may have occurred during your tenancy. Where possible, repair or replace broken items such as light fittings, locks, doors, windows or furniture. Simple fixes like filling wall holes or touching up paint can make a big difference when it comes to sign-out.
Finally, it’s always a good idea to take clear photos once the property is empty and clean, giving you a record of its condition at sign-out.
If you have any questions or need further guidance, our Student Lettings team is here to help make the process as straightforward as possible.
